SUMMARY:SMF 2 Container Format
DESCRIPTION:The MIDI Project Container File format is intended to deliver multiple tracks of MIDI data and other media. The set of tracks and media used in the file are enumerated and arranged in a Manifest file in XML format. \nMedia types supported include: \n● MIDI Clip Files (for MIDI 1.0 and MIDI 2.0)\n● Musical Notation (MusicXML [W3C01] or PDF [ISO01])\n● Audio Files\n● Video Files\n● Lyrics: may be in MIDI Clip Files and/or in Musical Notation files.\n● Metadata – XML and MIDI Message \nThe MIDI Project Container File format has two main use cases. \n● Distribution/publishing of content that includes both MIDI and any of the file types listed above\n● Data exchange between software and hardware applications that include both MIDI and any of the file types listed above.

SUMMARY:DAW Control Profiles
DESCRIPTION:The MIDI Association is working on a modular set of MIDI 2.0 DAW Control Profiles intended to eventually replace Mackie Control with a unified industry standard for all hardware and software. The modular approach was taken because of the wide variety of capabilities of DAW controllers from simple start\, stop and record buttons to elaborate devices with multiple displays. \nThe first Profile will be a Function Block Transport Control and Location Profile that defines Transport Control\,  Record Arm\, Cycle Markers\, and Punch In and Out Points \nThe second planned Profile is a Single Channel Dynamic Control Profile.  \nDynamic Controls are a set of controls that affect remote parameters of a Device. It is most often a plugin or tone generator. The set of parameters that are affected may change between sound engines or even between patches and are typically the parameters that represent the best/common ways to adjust the sound. \nThis specification is intended to promote capability between products that either use a set of common physical controls to manage different destinations or change the set of destinations depending on focus. \nThe third planned Profile is a Function Block Mixing profile.

SUMMARY:Drum Profiles Update
DESCRIPTION:The MIDI Association has worked on two Drum Profiles in 2025. \nThe Default Drum Note Map Profile specifies 62 Drum/Percussion Sounds mapped to Specified Note Numbers.\nThis is the common mapping in many Drum Machines and Synthesizers since the 1980s. \nThis Profile was adopted in the fall of 2025. \nThe Drum Performance Profile is focused on the more advanced features available in electronic drums kits which have positional sensing for cymbals and drums and complex hihat configurations. \nThe Drum Performance Profile design is complete and it should be approved in Q1 of 2026.

SUMMARY:Piano Profile Demo
DESCRIPTION:The Piano Profile standardizes the velocity and pedal curves and the registered controllers used to control a piano’s performance via MIDI. It was adopted by The MIDI Association just before NAMM. The model is based on the acoustic piano which is why it was important to have Kawai\, Steinway and Yamaha involved in the project. \nJoin Kawai Artist David Snyder and Steinway Artist John Beasley as they explore the creative possibilities that the Piano Profile opens up. \n“John Beasley\, the one-time keyboardist for Freddie Hubbard & Miles Davis\, whose playing reflects a variety of generational influences\, incorporating the emphatic chordal clusters of Herbie Hancock\, the rhythmic quirkiness of Monk and the lush intelligence of Art Tatum into a highly refined personal voice.”\n-The Los Angeles Times \nDavid Snyder is a pianist and composer raised in rural North Dakota and now based in the vibrant city of Los Angeles. With over twelve years of classical training\, he has delicately translated his expertise into creating breathtaking solo piano and instrumental tracks. \nThese artists will be performing on a Roland A88 MKII controller playing Synthogy’s Ivory software. \nThe goal of the Piano profile is to improve the interoperability between different manufacturers whether they make digital pianos\, keyboard controllers\, software synthesizers or acoustic pianos driven by MIDI like Yamaha and Steinway.

SUMMARY:Orchestral Articulation Demo
DESCRIPTION:The MIDI Association will show a working demo of the Orchestral Articulation Profile at NAMM 2026. \nThis profile will standardize the method for embedding articulations directly into the MIDI 2.0 Note On message. \nOnce implemented by plugin companies using the MIDI -CI helper library being developed by the 4 plugin format companies ( AU\, AAX\, CLAP and VST) this will provide composers a standardized way to handle orchestral articulations. \nMIDI Association member Audio Impressions has developed a sample library that supports a wide range of different articulations and The MIDI Association helped create a hardware prototype that allows switching the articulations by MIDI 2.0 note attributes.
